How a Gym Chain Uses Wall Graphics to Make Every Location Feel the Same
A regional gym chain with 12 locations came to us with a branding problem that has nothing to do with logos.
Every location had the same equipment, the same membership pricing, and the same staff uniforms. But walk into any two locations and they felt completely different. One had motivational quotes painted on the walls (done by a local artist who'd since moved away). Another had framed posters from a big-box store. A third had bare walls with some holes from previous tenants.
The owner wanted every location to feel like the same brand. Like walking into any Starbucks — you know where you are immediately.
## The approach
We designed a set of modular wall graphic panels that could be installed in any location regardless of the wall dimensions. The system had three components:
**Accent walls.** One large wall in the main workout area got a full-coverage graphic — a dramatic close-up photograph of hands gripping a barbell, printed on matte vinyl at about 8 feet wide by 6 feet tall. No text. Just the image. Every location got the same image on their main accent wall.
**Motivational strips.** Horizontal vinyl strips (about 18 inches tall) with motivational text in the brand's font, placed at eye level around the weight area. These were pre-cut phrases that could be arranged to fit any wall width. Things like "START SOMEWHERE" and "YOUR ONLY COMPETITION IS YESTERDAY."
**Wayfinding graphics.** Smaller directional graphics pointing to locker rooms, classes, front desk. Same icons and style at every location.
## Why vinyl, not paint
The owner had originally asked about painting the walls. We talked them out of it for practical reasons:
**Consistency.** Paint colors look different depending on the wall texture, lighting, and how many coats are applied. Our vinyl is color-matched across all 12 locations because it's printed from the same digital file.
**Speed.** We produced all the graphics in one batch and shipped installation kits to each location. Each location took about 4 hours to install. Painting would have been 2-3 days per location with drying time, plus the gym would need to close.
**Changeability.** When the owner wanted to refresh the motivational quotes after a year, we printed new strips. Peel the old ones off, apply the new ones. No repainting, no matching colors, no primer.
**Durability.** Gym walls get hit with dumbbells, scraped by equipment, and sweated on. Our wall vinyl has a matte laminate that's easy to wipe clean and resists scuffing. Paint would need touch-ups constantly.
## The cost for 12 locations
Total project cost was about $14,000 for all 12 locations — that includes design, production, and installation kits (they used their maintenance staff for installation with our printed instructions). Per location, that's roughly $1,200 for a complete branded interior transformation.
Compare that to hiring an interior designer for 12 locations. You're looking at $5,000-15,000 per location easily.
## The result
The owner shared member feedback with us a few months later. Multiple people who visited different locations commented that they "felt like the same place." That's exactly what branding is supposed to do — create a consistent experience regardless of physical location.
