How to Prepare Artwork for Large-Format Printing

CasoPromos TeamJanuary 10, 2026

Preparing artwork for large-format printing requires a different approach than designing for digital screens or standard print. Understanding the requirements upfront saves time, avoids costly reprints, and ensures your finished product looks exactly as intended.

Resolution is one of the most common issues with large-format files. For graphics viewed at close range, aim for 150-300 DPI at final size. For banners and signs viewed from a distance, 72-100 DPI is typically sufficient. Always design at the actual output size or at a proportional scale.

Use CMYK color mode for all print files. RGB colors can shift unpredictably during the printing process. If your brand has specific Pantone colors, include them in your file and communicate them to your printer to ensure accurate color matching.

Include bleed in your files, typically 0.25 to 0.5 inches beyond the trim edge. This ensures that there are no unprinted white edges after the material is cut. Also include crop marks or trim lines so the production team knows exactly where to cut.

Convert all fonts to outlines before submitting your files. This prevents font substitution issues if the production team does not have your specific fonts installed. Save your files in a standard format such as PDF, AI, or EPS for the best results.
